"Do you come here often?" Duo sat on the edge of the pew, legs swishing out of sync as they dangled over a vast nothingness of green carpet.

"No." The boy's cold voice made Duo jump. At first he thought that it was some unseen adult, this boy's guardian, that had spoken. Or worse, an adult monster trapped inside this boy, who was ready to tear out at any moment.

"Oh," Duo held the tail of his braid and casually flicked the splayed end. "Have you ever been here before?"

"No."

"Oh." Duo was quite put off by this and placed his hands on his hips defensively as his legs stopped swishing, and ignoring his fallen braid. "Well, I live here you know." It was a statement to which there was no retort. Feeling slighted, Duo continued. "I live in the orphanage here with Sister Helen and Father Maxwell. I'm in the choir. I was singing today."

Still the boy said nothing and Duo felt the compulsion to continue.

"I had a solo, three in fact. I did the psalm. I'm the only loud one in the choir, really. I do the psalm almost every Sunday. Christmas Eve is a special psalm that I do every year. Did you like it?" Duo paused, giving the boy a chance to speak.

Silence.

It unnerved Duo, disturbing his core, so instead of being indignant due to lack of support from this boy he kept talking.

"I used to live on the streets with my friends. Solo and I were a team. Solo was my best friend, by the way." Duo let his arms drop to his knees as he started swinging his legs again. "He died, though. Yeah. That was real tough. But I know he's watching over me, always. No matter what, we'll always be together."

The boy looked at his watch. "I have to go." He stood and left.

Duo felt the loss of his presence shake his entire body. Duo watched him go for a moment before he jumped to his feet and followed the boy.

"Wait, wait! Why ya leaving?"

They stood at the top of the staircase and peered down. There was a small foyer at the end of the stairs where the large doors in and out of the church stood. The sun was slowly setting and the snow was cast in an orange glow. The boy pointed to the two stragglers still talking with Father Maxwell. Duo couldn't see their faces. The sun was too bright and their backs were to the two boys.

"My parents." The boy's deep blue eyes connected with Duo's as Duo turned to look at him. He understood, but he still didn't want the boy to leave. But he knew that, no matter how much he loved and cherished Sister Helen, Father Maxwell, and Maxwell Church, if a loving parent whisked him off his feet he would go.

"Will you be back?" Duo shoved his hands into his pockets and looked at the marbled staircase.

"Dunno. It's up to them." The boy descended a few steps.

"I hope you come back. Just cuz Solo takes up a big part of my heart doesn't mean I don't have some left over for a new best friend."

The boy nodded, turning on his heels, and ran down the flight of stairs.

"Wait!" Duo chased after him. "Wait! I don't know your name! Wait!"

Duo looked down at the boy who lay on the cold cement. He couldn't believe that of all of the people in the entire universe...it was him. Duo thought that he would never get another chance to talk to this boy, or to ask his name. And now, seeing this face from a lifetime ago, be felt a long-lost warmth fill him at the prospect of having this boy as his friend.

"Heero, oh Heero!" The girl in the blue dress went to jump into the water after him.

"Back off little lady-"

"You shot him!" She turned on me, eyes wild with rage as she marched toward me.

"His name's Heero, you say?" She was the least threatening girl I'd ever laid eyes on, dressed all elegant for some fancy shindig.

"Yes. Heero Yuy. What's it to you?"

"Whoa, no need to get all defensive." I held my hands up; my gun secured tightly to my hip holster. "Was just a simple question, that's all."

But I knew that wasn't his real name. It couldn't have been. I came from a place that knew all about that name, and this boy was not Heero Yuy. Heero Yuy was dead.

"He's my friend. And I'll take him to the hospital, not you."

Well then little lady, I'll just have to break him out.
